about

The tragedy of the Morecambe Bay cockle-pickers, during the night of 5 February 2004, has always bothered me. The 10th anniversary inspired the lyric. Some of the families are still paying off the people traffickers in China who got them to the UK in the first place. Only one gang-master in the UK was prosecuted and later deported on his release. The bodies of 21 of the 23 who died were recovered at the time. The remains of the 22nd were found in 2010 and the 23rd has still to be found. The exploitation is still going on, but now with Eastern Europeans replacing the Chinese.

lyrics

V1. Sit yourself down with your whiskey. I’ll tell you a tale of our times. When 23 died, caught out by the
tide as they harvest the fruits of the sea. They harvest the fruits of the sea. V2. Liu and Xu back in China. Got the
call from their dad in the sea. I’m saying goodbye, getting ready to die. Tell the world what happened to me. Tell
the world what happened to me. Chorus: In a pub by the bay heard the gang master say. There’s plenty more fish
in the sea. There’s plenty more fish in the sea. V3. Picked up at three in the morning. Picking cockles ‘til late in
the night. It’s two hours too long, the tide is too strong. No help, no rescue in sight. No help, no rescue in sight.
Chorus. V4. Go down to Knotts End in the evening. See the lights on the sea in the dark. It’s Poles not Chinese
now fishing the seas. What are the lessons we’ve learned. What are the lessons we’ve learned. Chorus X2.
