I had been humming a lament-like tune to myself for a couple of years and have been interested in the Scottish tradition of laments for even longer. My second stay on Lismore, my respect and gratitude for how the NHS cared for my brother and increasing anger at how the NHS is being systematically demolished by successive Governments all combined to produce this song.
It is the only song I have ever written in a minor key, apparently.
lyrics
V1. Who’s going to miss you when you’re gone. Who’s going to miss you when you’re gone. You’ve cared for young and old, coming in from the cold. They’re going to miss you when you’re gone.
V2. Who’s going to miss your heart and soul. Who’s going to miss your
heart and soul. For the rich, for the poor, you keep an open door. They’re going to miss your heart and soul.
Bridge. You gave them hope, you took their fear. You gave them a shoulder for their tears. You care for young and old, coming in from the cold. They’re going to miss you when you’re gone.
V3. Instrumental.
Bridge. You gave them hope, you took their fear. You gave them a shoulder for their tears. You care for young and old, coming in from the cold. They’re going to miss you when you’re gone.
V4. Who’s going to miss you when you’re gone. Who’s going to miss you when you’re gone? We, who want it free both for you and for me. We’re going to miss you when you’re, we’re going to miss you when you’re, we’re going to miss you when you’re gone.
